Altaf demands formation of new provinces

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Tuesday demanded an All Parties Conference (APC) on the issue of formation of new provinces, saying that new provinces would help end the feeling of deprivation among different ethnic and linguistic communities.

He proposed this while addressing a meeting of the MQM Coordination Committee, held simultaneously in London and Karachi.

He said the government should convene the APC on the formation of new provinces urgently. Formation of new provinces will guarantee the security and prosperity of the country, Altaf said.

He said the government should pay attention to equitable distribution of national resources and elimination of a sense of deprivation among different groups. The MQM leader appealed to the masses to pay attention to their responsibilities towards the development and security of the country.

He said the whole world, including powerful industrialised nations and superpowers, are facing uncertain economic conditions, deteriorating public order, growing poverty, unemployment, degrading health and education sectors.

The situation has caused alarm across the globe and people are feeling that a third world war may start, the MQM chief said, adding that in this critical situation rulers of an underdeveloped country like Pakistan, which is entangled in debt, will have to come out of their biases and make realistic policies for the security and prosperity of Pakistan.

Tough decisions are needed for national security and prosperity, Altaf said. He said the country’s population has increased manifold after 1971 but no new administrative changes were made or initiated to run the affairs of the state smoothly.

He said it is natural that unequal distribution of national resources has caused disunity and friction among people. “We can make loft claims about unity, understanding and solidarity. But we should learn lessons from the countries that got independence 60 years ago. These countries have formed new provinces after their independence with the growth in their populations. We have not taken any initiatives in this regard,” he said.Altaf said new provinces will be good for the solidarity, development and prosperity of the country.
