New Delhi: There is more trouble for arrested cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan in the IPL spot-fixing case. They have been sent to judicial custody till June 18 along with 21 others.
Prosecution has invoked the harsh Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act against them. But the police have not decided on whether MCOCA will be applicable to all those arrested in the case.
MCOCA is one of the most stringent laws. It provides for any confession made in front of the DCP in Delhi or the SP in any other state to be accepted as evidence.
Charges under MCOCA are non-bailable. The police can get custody of the accused of up to 30 days under this charge.
The hearing of the case against them will now move to a special MCOCA court. This came after the police told the court that the bookie link was being operated with underworld links. Sources say the police have evidence of links with Chhota Shakeel and Dawood Ibrahim.
However, Sreesanth's lawyer Rebecca John alleged on CNN-IBN the stringent act was invoked specifically to deny him bail. In fact Sreesath and others' bail pleas have been rejected now and they will remain in judicial custody. Sreesaneth's lawyer will file a fresh bail plea in the MCOCA court.
Sources say once the case is taken up under MCOCA, the Delhi Police will seek the custody of alleged bookies Ramesh Vyas and Tiku Mandi from the Mumbai Police.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai where the police is probing the IPL betting case, BCCI chief N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and actor Vindoo Dara Singh were on Tuesday granted bail by a Mumbai court. All others arrested by the Mumbai Police in the betting scandal including bookies Ramesh Vyas, Alpesh Patel and Prem Tarneja have also been granted bail.
The court has granted them conditional bail on sureties of Rs 25,000 each. All the accused have been told not to leave the country and to appear before the Mumbai Crime Branch every alternate day.
