ISLAMABAD - In an unprecedented move, Afghan Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Mohammad Omar admitted recently that some of Taliban’s area commanders were involved in the business of kidnapping for ransom, bringing bad name to the Taliban movement.
“We need to understand that all those involved in this heinous crime were bringing bad name to the entire organisation of Taliban and we need to identify all of them,” Mullah Omar told his commanders through an audio message that was sent to all of his associates and area commanders.
Mullah Omer advised important commanders, including Hafiz Gull Bahader, Hakimullah Mehsood and all others who are working with the TTP to follow his instructions strictly or get ready to face the music.
Mullah Omar who lives somewhere at undisclosed locations in Taliban strongholds in Afghanistan is the chief of Afghan Taliban, but his moral authority extends beyond the Pak-Afghan border as Pakistani Taliban also consider him as their supreme leader. On the Pakistani side, on ground, Tahrik-a-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), headed by Hakimullah Mehsood, practically controls pockets of tribal areas along the Pak-Afghan border. TTP has claimed many high profile terrorist activities inside Pakistan since its inception.
Mullah Omar made it loud and clear that Taliban were supposed to fight the ‘evil forces’ just to ensure supremacy of Allah, the Quran and Sunnah. Hence, they should concentrate on their job. He, however, said he was receiving credible reports about some commanders who were allegedly involved in kidnapping for ransom. “We need to identify all those in our ranks. They need to be eliminated,” well-placed sources quoted Mullah Omar as saying.
It is pertinent to mention here that it was the first time in the history of Taliban that a supreme commander of an organisation that claims it is fighting against evil forces admitted that some of his commanders were involved in kidnapping for ransom. Sources said such commanders were in close collaboration with armed gangs and notorious elements to mint money through kidnapping, arson and car stealing.
Sources said the Taliban chief commander, through the same audio message, congratulated his commanders for triumph in the war against US-led troops and directed his allied groups to accomplish the jihad on right paths, besides preventing them from disturbing life of the common man.
When contacted, a close associate of Mullah Omar, confirmed the same to The Nation, adding the chief commander was perturbed on the reports that some of his commanders were involved in kidnapping for ransom.
Attempting to counter its reputation for the brutal suppression of the common man’s rights during the routine killings in tribal areas, Omar said: “Taliban will give all legitimate rights to all the accused in the light of the Islamic principles and our noble cause.”
Omar, through the audio message, claimed he received so many complaints about some commanders and the groups who were involved in the cases of abduction for ransom. He revealed that there some groups were even involved in the business of ‘hire to kill’.
