Iran ready to help resolve Syria crisis: Afkham

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has stressed the need for a peaceful solution to the foreign-backed crisis in Syria, reiterating that the Islamic Republic is ready to assist in resolving the deadly turmoil plaguing the Arab country.

“Given Iran’s capabilities to [help] end the crisis in this country, some conflicting sides in Syria are in contact with Iran; we also have announced that we are prepared to help resolve the conflict in this country,” said Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham during a Tuesday news conference.

She also urged all sides involved in the Syrian conflict to support initiatives that will end the turmoil through political and peaceful methods based on the rights of the Syrian nation.Syria has been the scene of a deadly crisis since March 2011. Some reports say over 140,000 people have so far been killed and millions of others displaced because of the foreign-backed militancy plaguing Syria.

Iran has repeatedly voiced its opposition to any foreign interference in Syria’s internal affairs, calling for inclusive dialog and national reconciliation as well as free elections as the keys to the settlement of the crisis in the Arab country.

Elsewhere in her comments, Afkham condemned as “inhumane” the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria and said “terrorist groups” are threatening the African state’s security.

Afkham also voiced Tehran’s concern over the terrorist attacks targeting Nigerian civilians and said Abuja must adopt proper measures to prevent terrorist activities and restore stability and peace to the region.

Nigeria kidnappings 'outrageous, heartbreaking': Obama

KANO: US President Barack Obama on Tuesday described the kidnapping of more than 220 schoolgirls by militants in Nigeria as “heartbreaking” and “outrageous” as Washington deployed military experts in the hunt for the children.

Obama urged global action against Boko Haram and confirmed Nigerian leaders had accepted an offer to deploy US personnel there, soon after residents said the extremist group had seized eight more girls, aged between 12 and 15, again in the embattled northeast.

New Delhi: In a historic verdict, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will not need permission from the government to conduct an inquiry in corruption cases against senior bureaucrats.

A constitutional bench of the apex court upheld the primacy of Article 14 of the Constitution - equality before law – to bring senior bureaucrats – Jt Secretary and above – at par with the junior officers and others.

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to lift the ban on video-sharing website YouTube, DawnNews reported.

During today's National Assembly session, chaired by Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Abbasi, MNA Shazia Marri belonging to the Pakistan People Party (PPP) submitted a resolution demanding the lifting of the ban on YouTube which was unanimously accepted by the lower house of parliament.

LAHORE: Former captain and fast bowler Waqar Younis has been named as the new head coach by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the board announced on Tuesday.

The appointment of Younis, who has been given a two-year contract, comes merely days after Sethi's interview to a local newspaper in which he hinted that a deal between the two parties was all but done.

ISLAMABAD: Former chief justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Tuesday rejected the rigging accusations made against him by Pakistan Tehreeak-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, terming them as 'baseless', DawnNews reported.

The former chief justice said that Returning Officers (ROs) for the 2013 elections were appointed by the Election Commission of Pakistan and not by him. He added that the 'absurd' allegations hurled by the PTI chief did not warrant a response.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday categorically stated that Pakistan desired peace and tranquility in the Middle East and would maintain the policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

Addressing the concluding session of the Envoys Conference which focused on the Middle East, at the Foreign Office in the federal capital, Sharif said Pakistan had an equal aspiration to forge closer bilateral ties with all countries in the region.

Subrata Roy, the chief of the unlisted Sahara conglomerate, was refused bail by the Supreme Court today for his company's failure to refund investors in illegal bonds schemes.

The judges used strong language to censure Sahara and Mr Roy for repeatedly defying court orders and for "calculated mind games" to claim that his detention is illegal.

At least 10 suspected militants killed in Balochistan

QUETTA: Frontier Corps (FC) personnel on Monday claimed to have killed 10 militants in Balochistan's troubled Panjgur district.

Khan Wasey, a spokesman for the para-military force, said that the FC launched an operation against miscreants involved in targeted killings and bomb explosions in Panjgur district's mountainous areas.

He said ten suspected militants were killed whereas three FC soldiers were seriously wounded during the operation.

Violence in Iraq, including shelling in a militant-held city and an attack targeting Shia pilgrims, has killed more than 30 people in 24 hours, officials said Sunday.

The bloodshed comes as officials count ballots from the April 30 general election, the first since U.S. troops withdrew in late 2011, and amid a protracted surge in nationwide unrest that has sparked fears of a return to the sectarian killing sprees of 2006-2007.

In Fallujah, just a short drive west of Baghdad, shelling in southern areas of the city killed 11 people and wounded four, Doctor Ahmed Shami said.

TEHRAN, Iran – International nuclear inspectors will visit two sites in Iran in the coming days, the country's official news agency reported Sunday, as an official said that would fulfill a series of demands made by the United Nations nuclear watchdog.

The demands by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which Iran was required to meet by May 15, include releasing information about its efforts to develop a type of explosive detonator that can be used in nuclear weapons.

Aden: The army today killed 43 Al-Qaeda suspects, mainly foreigners, and wounded dozens of others on day six of a major offensive in southern Yemen, military officials said.

Most of the "terrorists" were killed in Shabwa province during the ongoing operation against Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the defence ministry said in text messages sent to journalists.

PESHAWAR: At least two people were killed on Monday when unidentified militants attacked Nato containers in the Jamrud tehsil of Khyber tribal region.

The unknown gunmen opened fire at three Nato containers in the Wazir Dhand area of Jamrud tehsil after which the containers caught fire and were soon set ablaze.

RAWALPINDI: Non-implementation of the changes approved by the PPP government in the arms and ammunitions import policy a year ago has flooded the country with contraband arms, Dawn has learnt.

A senior security official said the law enforcement agencies were worried that importers had been bringing in and marketing small as well as sophisticated weapons by manipulating the existing policy introduced in 2006-07.

That policy put a monetary ceiling, ranging between Rs100,000 and Rs20 million, on commercial arms importers. But, by under-invoicing their imports, the crafty among the 520 arms dealers in the country brought in more quantity of weapons than their monetary quota would buy them in the international arms market.

ANKARA : A leading European Commission official has urged the Turkish government to stop attacking the European Union and engage more deeply in cooperation.

Stefano Manservisi, who was recently named the new head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, called the relationship between the bloc and Turkey “extremely strong” in financial and political terms as well as in the “people dimension.” However, the Italian said he finds recent anti-EU remarks from Turkish politicians “concerning.”

MINGORA: Jamaat-i-Islami provincial chief and member of Taliban negotiation committee Prof Mohammad Ibrahim said here on Sunday that there were a lot of hurdles in holding direct dialogue between the government and Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan.

However, the negotiation committee would continue its struggle to assist both the sides to achieve the objective of restoration of peace, he added.

“We are struggling to remove mistrust between both the sides so that peace process can be accelerated,” Mr Ibrahim told journalists after addressing a donor conference, organised by local chapter of Jamaat-i-Islami.

Thirteen killed as ferry capsizes in Bangladesh storm

The death toll in the ferry capsize in the Golachipa river in Bangladesh rose to 13 on Sunday with the recovery of five more bodies, police said.“Divers pulled out five bodies from the river in the morning,” Officer-in-charge of Golachipa police station Fakhruddin was quoted as saying by the Daily Sun.At least 25 passengers are still missing.

MANAMA: Five people, including a woman who used a pillow to pretend she was pregnant, were sentenced to five years in jail on Tuesday for plotting to disrupt the 2013 Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix by planting a bomb at the circuit, state news agency BNA said.

It said policewomen foiled the scheme when they searched the woman and found her disguise while she was on a trial run for smuggling a home-made bomb in on the day of the race in April last year.

PESHAWAR: Member of the Taliban negotiating committee Professor Ibrahim said on Thursday that the Pakistan Army and the Taliban were the real parties to the peace talks, DawnNews reported.

Ibrahim during an address to a tribal jirga in the provincial capital said that the persisting conflict could not be solved by any army operation or militant attacks - it could only be solved through peaceful negotiations.

India’s aim to arm Afghan forces may anger Pakistan

NEW DELHI: India has signed an agreement under which it will pay Russia to supply arms and equipment to the Afghan military as foreign combat troops prepare to leave the country, in a move that risks infuriating Pakistan.

Under the deal, smaller arms such as light artillery and mortars will be sourced from Russia and moved to Afghanistan.

But it could eventually involve the transfer of heavy artillery, tanks and even combat helicopters that the Afghans have been asking India for since last year.

Iran is looking to buy 400 passenger planes in the next 10 years to upgrade its aging fleet if Western sanctions imposed over its controversial nuclear program are lifted, the country's top aviation official said Wednesday.

The remark by Ali Reza Jahangirian of Iran's Civil Aviation Organization reflects Tehran's interest in attracting foreign investment and upgrading its creaking aviation industry.

Chennai: Two explosions on a train killed a 24-year-old woman and wounded 10 people, two of them critically, at the Chennai Central Railway Station on Thursday morning.

Sources say a man who was found hiding in the train was questioned.

The blasts took place at around 7:15 am in two sleeper coaches of the Guwahati-Bangalore Express, which had just pulled into platform 9 of the station for a 10-minute stop.

Jayalalithaa strongly condemned the twin bomb blasts on a train and expressed her grief at the death of one young woman and several who were injured.

Three schools blown up in Northern Pakistan

PESHAWAR: Three primary schools were blown up on Thursday in the Mohmand Agency and Shabqadar areas of the Charsadda district.

Police said militants had blown up a girls primary school in the Saro Kalley area in Charsadda.

The militants had planted explosives at the school and blew it up in the wee hours of Thursday.

In the bordering Mohmand Agency two schools were also blown up in the Drwazgai area.

Part of the Escambia County, Florida, jail collapsed after an apparent gas explosion, killing two inmates and injuring about 100 others.

The explosion happened late Wednesday night in the Pensacola jail's central booking area, county spokeswoman Kathleen Castro said. About 600 inmates were in the building at the time, she said.

BEIRUT: Clashes between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters killed 14 rebels in a flare-up overnight along a strategic corridor between Damascus and the Lebanese border, activists said Thursday.

The fighting in Zabadani - a town near Damascus and the last rebel stronghold in the area - is part of the larger battle for control of the mountainous Qalamoun region, stretching from the Syrian capital to the border with Lebanon.

Afghan and foreign forces kill 60 near Pakistan border

KABUL: Afghan troops backed by Western air power killed at least 60 militants near the Pakistan border, Afghanistan's intelligence agency said on Wednesday, in one of the biggest single assaults against the Taliban-linked Haqqani network.

US officials say Washington has intensified its drive against the network in an attempt to deal a lasting blow to the militants in Afghanistan before foreign combat forces depart this year.

Two mortar shells struck a school complex in central Damascus on Tuesday, killing at least 14 people and wounding dozens, state media and a monitoring group said.

The attack in the district of Shaghour came a day after President Bashar Al Assad nominated himself to stand for re-election, in defiance of calls for him to step aside and allow a political solution to Syria’s civil war.

At least 40 Hindu pilgrims injured in a road accident near Badin

Badin: At least 40 people have been injured including women and children when a Hindu pilgrims bus overturned near Badin district of Sindh here on early morning of Wednesday.

According to police, the hindu pilgrims were comprised of women and children and there were going to Badin for worship.

The police said that the bus overturned due to over speeding when it was going from Karachi to Badin.

Patna: The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday ordered the suspension of six policemen for allowing a jailed former legislator to use a mobile phone in a court premises in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district.

Munna Shukla was brought to the court for a hearing in connection with a murder case, said additional chief electoral officer R Lakshmanan told media persons.

Blast kills five in South Waziristan

PESHAWAR: At least five people were killed on Wednesday in remote control blast in the Shaktoi area of South Waziristan, DawnNews reported.

The bomb was planted on a roadside near a parked car.

South Waziristan is one of the seven semi-autonomous regions in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) that are governed by tribal laws.

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to clear outstanding dues of billions of rupees, the capital’s electricity company disconnected power supply to most major government departments on Tuesday to demonstrate its commitment to cracking down on power thieves and defaulters.

The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco) cut power to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, President House, Supreme Court and Pakistan Secretariat, including the offices of the Ministry of Water and Power.

MASTUNG: At least five security personnel and a robber were killed during exchange of fire with thieves in Balochistan's militancy-hit Mastung district on Tuesday, levies said.

A levies official, who declined to be named, told Dawn.com that armed robbers looted money from a private bank located in Mastung bazar.

"The robbers were fleeing when policemen retaliated," he said.

SC grants conditional bail to Sahara chief Subrata Roy

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked Sahara group chief Subrata Roy to deposit Rs 10,000 crore with the market regulator Sebi for his release on interim bail from judicial custody.

The apex court bench of Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice JS Khehar said that of the Rs 10,000 crore, Rs 5,000 crore would be deposited in cash, and the balance Rs 5,000 crore will be furnished through a bank guarantee.

ISLAMABAD: The religious affairs minister on Tuesday seemed appeasing mullahs who failed to stop the introduction of a private bill in the National Assembly that seeks to make child marriage a cognizable offence with higher punishment for violations.

The bill, brought by five lawmakers of the ruling PML-N, invited a retrogressive tirade from Maulana Mohammad Khan Shirani, chairman of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) and a member of the government-allied Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), who, along with another party colleague, called the move contrary to Islam and the Constitution, pressing a stance that recently outraged liberal circles and rights groups.

Violence across Iraq has killed more than 80 people, including 41 soldiers, and left scores more injured, amid the country's worst protracted period of unrest since 2008.

The bloodshed on Tuesday comes just weeks before Iraq is due to hold its first national vote since 2010, though the poll was thrown into disarray earlier when the entire electoral commission resigned over political interference.

In the deadliest attack, 22 soldiers were killed and 15 others injured in Al-Nibaee village, near Taji city, north of Baghdad.

KUWAIT CITY: Saudi Crown Prince Salman has called for "changing the balance of forces" on the ground in Syria's civil war, saying the crisis there had reached catastrophic proportions.

Heads of Arab states are holding their annual summit amid an unprecedented diplomatic fallout among the Gulf countries and tension over the crisis in Egypt and the conflict in Syria.

KABUL: Militants launched a gun and suicide attack on an Afghan election commission office in Kabul on Tuesday, police said, less than two weeks before the presidential poll.

The Taliban have vowed a campaign of violence to disrupt the ballot on April 5, urging their fighters to attack polling staff, voters and security forces in the run-up to election day.

Jodhpur: In a major breakthrough, the Delhi Police Special Cell on Tuesday arrested militant outfit Indian Mujahideen's (IM) head of India operations Tehseen Akhtar alias Monu, who was wanted in several terror attack cases.

According to reports, Tehseen Akhtar belonged to the Darbhanga module of the banned terrorist outfit and was heading IM operations in India after Yasin Bhatkal's arrest in August last year.

Akhtar is believed to have masterminded the serial blasts in Patna and Gaya.

ISLAMABAD: The government and the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Shura will not meet today to pursue peace talks on account of bad weather conditions, DawnNews reported.

Jamaat-i-Islami Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief and a member of the Taliban talks committee Professor Mohammad Ibrahim confirmed that talks between the two sides were postponed for today as it was not possible to travel due to bad weather.

Muslim's constitute 13.4% of the country's population and have a major say in the poll prospects in 110 Lok Sabha constituencies. Little wonder then that every time there is an election round the corner, the big question on most people's minds is, which way will India's largest minority vote. This year the question has an added significance, given the fact that Narendra Modi is the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. The jury is still out on which way the Muslims will tilt.

Suspected IM terrorist Mohd Sakib Ansari's aide arrested from Jodhpur

Barkat Ali, an alleged accomplice of suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorist Mohd Sakib Ansari, was arrested here on Tuesday.

Ali had managed to give the police the slip on Sunday and several police teams had swung into action to catch him.

"We received information about his arrival at home this morning following which the police cordoned off his house and arrested him," a police official said.

Islamabad – At least 10 people including two children and as many women were killed when a bus fell down a hill just northeast of Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, officials said on Sunday.

The bus, which was carrying 20 passengers from the hill town of Murree to Rawalpindi, lost traction on a slippery road amid rainfall, rolling on its side as it fell down a slope.

Turkish armed forces shot down a Syrian plane on Sunday that Ankara said had crossed into its air space in an area where Syrian rebels have been battling President Bashar al-Assad's forces for control of a border crossing.

"A Syrian plane violated our airspace," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told an election rally in northwest Turkey. "Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? Because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard."

An Egyptian court sentenced 529 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death on Monday on charges including murder, a defense lawyer said, in a sharp escalation of a crackdown on the movement.

Most were arrested during clashes which erupted in the southern province of Minya after the forced dispersal of two Muslim Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo on August 14.

Aden : Gunmen in Yemen killed 20 soldiers Monday at a checkpoint in Hadramawt province, the official Saba news agency said of the latest in a wave of attacks blamed on Al-Qaeda.

"Twenty soldiers were killed in the armed attack on an army checkpoint" near Reida, 135 kilometres (85 miles) east of the provincial capital Mukalla in the south, Saba said.
